Colorado Composers
We are inviting Colorado-based composers who write for treble choir to submit works for consideration.

Who we are:
Safonia is a non-profit community treble chorus based in Denver, Colorado comprised of 26 auditioned voices. We are dedicated to elevating treble choral literature by amplifying local voices, showcasing diverse works, and creating high-quality recordings that benefit composers, audiences, and the broader choral community.
What we’re doing:
We are inviting Colorado-based composers who write for treble choir to submit works for consideration to be:

Performed by Safonia in our Spring 2026 concert featuring exclusively Colorado composers

Professionally recorded to produce an album of locally composed music
-
Shared with CPR (Colorado Public Radio) and made available for streaming and promotional use
Why:
Our mission is to expand the treble choir repertoire with high-quality, diverse works and support Colorado composers by offering exceptional performances and recordings they can use for publication, grant applications, and broader sharing. As a non-profit, we do this collaboratively: composers will receive equal rights to all final recordings.
Eligibility and Requirements
Before you submit your choral work for consideration, make sure you meet the requirements.

Eligibility:

Composer must be a current Colorado resident (students from CO universities are welcome!)

Composer must hold full rights to the submitted work (see below for guidelines)
Musical Requirements:

Original compositions only:
-
No arrangements of copyrighted songs or texts unless the material is in the public domain or fully owned by the composer

Public domain melodies or texts are acceptable
✅ Example: a new setting of “How Can I Keep From Singing” (text or tune)
❌ Not allowed: an arrangement of a Carole King, Joni Mitchell, or any other copyrighted pop song
❌ Not allowed: settings of poems or texts still under copyright

For treble choir:

SSA, SSAA, SSSAAA, or SSSSAAAA voicings
-
Works may include piano accompaniment or one featured solo instrument (e.g., cello, flute, oboe, percussion)

No full orchestration or large ensemble accompaniment

Duration: approximately 2–6 minutes in length
(This allows us to feature multiple composers in our concert and on the album)

Style:
We welcome a wide variety of genres and aesthetics including but not limited to:

Contemporary choral
-
Spirituals and chant
-
Pop-influenced art songs or satire
-
Folk settings
-
Accessible experimental or narrative-driven works
-
We encourage submissions that reflect diverse identities, broaden perspectives, or offer fresh takes on treble literature.
Disclaimer:
This is not a contest or commission. It’s an opportunity for your music to be performed at a high level, professionally recorded, and promoted alongside our chorus. Selected composers will be invited to attend our spring concert, speak to our audience, and promote their work.
